ColumnHalf a yearColumn

This year is shaping up to be quite eventful. It’s barely half over, and I can’t imagine what wonders the rest will bring. But, in short, let me discuss what has already come.

During my extended job search (and therefore extended unemployment) I was invited to join a small team of people in creating an independent film. I was brought on as recording engineer. This was mainly because I am the only guy in the circle of friends concerned with home recording equipment, and because indie films of this nature have very little budget, which means they can’t just walk down to the local “Engineers ‘R Us” and hire one full time. This project is now actually nearing completion. It entailed a much greater amount of work than anticipated, but thankfully the quality is proportionally greater than anticipated.

The show is a rock opera with several tied vignettes of Roman mythological stories. Due to the demanding nature of musical productions and the inevitable lack of proper resources for an indie film, my responsibilities snowballed a big father than “just the guy presses buttons in the studio”. I operated cameras, directed a few songs, dresses sets, assisted in electrical wiring and construction, a little bit of costume work, and eventually I was called upon to be an actor. A tall order, but somehow it has all added up to a great film done on a shoestring budget. Someday it will be a hell of a story to tell the grandkids.

And speaking of kids, I also made of one those a couple months back. Come January, I will officially be a father! To top it all off, I was offered full time employment in the last month which I will start July 21st. Thank goodness I will be able to take care of my growing family (and maybe pay for that whole school thing I did for two years). Wish me luck.

Postscript: Those of you connected to me on facebook can view other behind-the-scenes shots of the Rock Opera as well as Very Professional Studios, where the music was recorded.
